While the national media gets sweaty and breathless over the John Edwards-as-Rielle Hunter’s-baby-daddy story, this happened. Corporations can now spend to support political campaigns — though not directly to the coffers of candidates themselves — unfettered by pesky campaign spending limits meant to limit the influence of America’s wealthiest corporations on the electoral process.
A flood of corporate dollars into elections doesn’t benefit voters. It benefits the corporations that hope to advocate for candidates friendly to their generous bottom lines. And that’s a bad deal.
